Chimney Damper Repair

A damper that sticks or won't seal wastes heat all winter and lets weather in year-round. Often, it can simply be repaired.

Brick fireplace where the damper controls airflow and draft

The damper is the movable seal between your firebox and the flue. When it works, it lets smoke out during a fire and seals tight when the fireplace is idle. When it sticks, warps, or corrodes — which happens with age and moisture — you lose heated air up the chimney all winter and let cold air, water, and outdoor odors down it year-round.

Roosevelt Chimney Works repairs damaged throat dampers wherever repair is the sensible choice: freeing a stuck plate, replacing a corroded pivot or handle, and restoring the seal. A working damper is a genuine comfort and energy improvement, and often a repair is all it takes.

Signs your damper needs repair

  • The damper sticks, won't open, or won't close smoothly.
  • It no longer seals — you feel a draft with the fireplace idle.
  • Rust or corrosion on the damper plate or frame.
  • The handle or control is bent, loose, or broken.
  • Cold air or odors coming down an idle chimney.

How we repair dampers

We assess the existing throat damper to see what's actually wrong — a plate seized with rust, a broken handle, a warped seat — and repair it where the components are sound enough to restore. Freeing and cleaning a stuck damper and renewing its seal is frequently all that's needed.

If the damper is too corroded or warped to seal reliably even after repair, we'll tell you honestly and walk you through replacement options — including top-sealing dampers covered on our damper replacement page. But we always try the repair route first when it makes sense.

Pittsburgh & Western PA context

In Pittsburgh's climate, a damper that won't seal is a year-round problem: heated air escaping through the winter and humid, odor-laden air pushing down through the summer. Restoring a tight seal noticeably improves comfort and energy use.
