Chimney Leak Repair

Water stains near the fireplace? We track leaks to their actual source and stop them — not just cover the drywall.

A leaking chimney is one of the most misdiagnosed problems in a house. The water shows up as a stain on the ceiling or a damp smell near the firebox, but the entry point is usually somewhere entirely different — a cracked crown, failed flashing, a missing cap, or brick that's soaked up water like a sponge.

Roosevelt Chimney Works specializes in tracking chimney leaks to their true origin. Because there are several common entry points and they call for different fixes, guessing is expensive. We diagnose first, repair the actual source, and then help you protect against it happening again.

Signs of a chimney leak

  • Water stains on the ceiling or walls around the chimney.
  • A musty or damp smell near the fireplace, worse after rain.
  • Water or rust visible in the firebox or on the damper.
  • Peeling paint or wallpaper near the chimney chase.
  • Dripping sounds inside the chimney during storms.

Finding and fixing the source

The four usual suspects are the crown (the concrete slab on top), the flashing (where the chimney meets the roof), the cap (which keeps rain out of the flue), and the masonry itself (porous brick and open joints). We examine each, because the wrong fix on the right symptom solves nothing.

Once we've identified the entry point — often more than one — we repair it directly: sealing or rebuilding the crown, replacing flashing, installing a proper cap, or repointing and waterproofing the masonry. Then we confirm the leak is actually stopped.

Pittsburgh & Western PA context

Western Pennsylvania's mix of heavy rain, snow and freeze-thaw cycles makes chimney leaks especially common here. Water that gets in during a fall storm can freeze over winter and widen the very cracks it entered through, turning a minor leak into a structural problem by spring.

FAQ

Chimney Leak Repair questions

That often points to flashing or crown issues that only let water in under certain conditions. Wind-driven rain can find gaps that a light shower won't. We test for these during diagnosis.
Yes. Persistent chimney leaks can rot roof framing, ruin drywall, and damage the firebox and damper. That's why finding the source early matters.
After repairing the entry point, we often recommend waterproofing the masonry and confirming the crown and cap are sound — the combination that keeps water out long-term.
