7 Signs Your Chimney Needs Repair
Chimneys rarely fail all at once. Learn to spot the early warning signs before a small problem becomes an expensive one.

Most chimney repairs would have been cheaper if they'd been caught earlier. The trouble is that chimneys deteriorate slowly and mostly out of sight, so the warning signs are easy to miss — until a stain appears on the ceiling. Here are the signs worth watching for.
1. White staining on the brick
Called efflorescence, this chalky white residue is mineral salt left behind as water moves through and evaporates from the masonry. It's a clear sign water is getting into the brick — and where water goes, freeze-thaw damage follows.
2. Crumbling or missing mortar
Mortar joints are designed to weather before the brick does. When you can scrape mortar out easily or see gaps between bricks, water has a direct path into the structure. Repointing at this stage is far cheaper than the damage that follows neglect.

3. Spalling brick
When brick faces flake, pit, or pop off, that's spalling — caused by absorbed water freezing and expanding. Left alone, it progressively destroys the masonry.
4. Rust in the firebox or on the damper
Rust means moisture is reaching metal parts it shouldn't. It often points to a missing or damaged cap, or a crown or flashing leak letting water into the flue.
5. Ceiling or wall stains near the chimney
Water stains around the chimney chase are a telltale leak sign. The entry point could be the crown, flashing, cap, or masonry — each needs a different fix, which is why diagnosis matters.
6. Debris in the firebox
Pieces of masonry or clay tile in the firebox can mean the flue liner is deteriorating — a genuine safety concern that warrants a camera inspection.
7. Draft problems or odors
Smoke rolling into the room or persistent chimney odors can signal blockages, liner issues, or cap problems. They're worth investigating rather than living with.
